The festival opening (on thursday 6th, in the Museo dell’Evoluzione) is dedicated to theatre, with “Storie naturali” (Natural Stories) by Edoardo Sanguineti: this pièce by one of the most important Italian poets develops around Plinio’s classical opera in a very personal way. For the first time it will be on stage in the complete version. One of the most thrilling happenings, Umberto Eco presenting the “Foucault Pendulum”, the experiment that inspired his best seller and that proved the revolving motion of the Earth back in 1851 in Paris’ Panthéon. The “Pendulum Experiment 2005 version” will take place in Bologna’s main Church (S. Petronio) with remarks by Physicist Federico Palmonari (Saturday, October 8th).
Amid the protagonists of Cronobie: Woo Suk Hwang, father of therapeutic cloning, participating to the seminar around New Medicine Perspective (The Secret of Stem Cells, Saturday, October 8th). Many other international guests take part in the numerous activities of Cronobie.
Among them, the photography artist Alexander Tsiaras from Travelogue (often on Life Magazine covers), New York, for his first time in Italy. Then Italian world-known politicians and scientists such as: Stefano Rodotà, Vincenzo Balzani, Edoardo Boncinelli, Giulio Cossu, Laura Calzà, Carlo Flamigni, Lucio Luzzatto, Antonino Zichichi and many others, like Claudio Franceschi, who has been working on a European Union Project around the study of the relationship between longevity and inherited genetic code. On October 9th, he will put on stage the show “Processo alla vecchiaia” (“Oldness on trial”).
One of Cronobie’s distinctive marks will be the scientific enlivenment of bizarre corners of the city of Bologna. Professors will stand from their chairs to enter bars and café’s, where Giorgio Celli, enthomologist, poet and TV personality , will be the anchorman of a daily review named “Le parole della scienza” (“The words of Science”): a sort of Science Café where scientist and researchers, comfortably seated amongst bar tables, will reveal themes and perspectives starting from scientific language key words. Along with scientists, doctors will also speak to common people in bars with the daily project “I medici in ascolto” (“Doctors listening”), by Carlo Bulletti.
In Piazza Maggiore (October 7th and 8th) the big top BioPop will be set up, a virtual agora where the citizenship will be able to meet with young bio-technologists coming from all over Europe, to discuss the hot themes of genetic manipulation, while taking part in the activities of a real molecular biology lab. This project has been supported by the European Commission.
